“Medellin was born in Mexico but spent much of his childhood in the United States. He was 18 in June 1993, when he and other members of the Black and Whites gang in Houston encountered two teenage girls on a railroad trestle. The girls were gang-raped and strangled. Their bodies were found four days later.

Medellin was arrested and told he had a right to remain silent and have a lawyer present. However police did not tell him that he could request assistance from the Mexican consulate.

Medellin gave a written confession. He was convicted of murder in the course of a sexual assault, a capital offense in Texas. A judge sentenced him to death in October 1994.

Medellin did not raise the lack of assistance from Mexican diplomats during his trial or sentencing. When he did claim his rights had been violated, Texas and federal courts turned him down because he had not objected at his trial.

Mexico later sued the US in the ICJ in The Hague on on behalf of Medellin and 50 others.”
It seems the President may be getting involved to either resolve an International dispute or even possibly gain leverage in some kind of negotiations (perhaps immigration issues, etc) between the US and Mexico. If this is the case, should the interest of the US as a whole override the interest of the individual or state?

My concern, is that would any evidence or other methods used in the original conviction be thrown out if a new trial is held with proper International counsel?

If it is, that would not be fair or just. They committed a crime in the US. True they may deserve counsel from their home country but they do not deserve to walk on some techinicality. The world needs justice. This man was part of a group that raped and killed two girls. Justice is paramount. However if it boils down to being just to the murderer or just to the girls’ families. I choose the families.

George Bush should send the President of Mexico. Drop your law suit on behalf of rapist and murderers or find someone new to sell your oil too and anyone crossing the border illegally gets shot at and probably hit. All trade ends with Mexico and favored nation status ends and NAFTA ends until the law suit is dropped….that would take Mexico about 15 minutes to drop the law suit.

A friend of mine told me; hey we should go on a road trip..from bogota to medellin to cali…..and I was idk…seems a bit dangerous isn’t it?

I remember watching a show and its like…the further you travel outward away from the city towards the hills, less populated areas..the more likely you are of running into these guys and if your american you will pretty much be held for ransom

Hi there,

on the main busroutes you indicated above between Bogota, Medellin, Cali, etc. you should not have any problems. I travelled by bus throughout Colombia last year for 2 months and did not encounter any problems whatsoever.

Have a great time in Colombia. It is a beautiful country with beautiful people, and relatively safe. In the media you very often hear about isolated cases.
